About My Practice
Sometimes life is painful. Sometimes it’s very, very confusing. Sometimes you feel like you’re at the end of your rope. You know you can do better. You want to feel happier. You just don’t know how to do it. Counseling and therapy can help you feel better. I can help.
- You may suffer from depression or anxiety because you don’t have a sense of purpose and direction.
- You fight angrily with your spouse (or partner) over seemingly unimportant matters but they soon get out of hand and you feel badly
- Your kids are acting up and you don’t know what in the name of heaven to do. Maybe you and your partner can’t even have a rational discussion about how to work together around discipline without a big argument.
- You drink too much alcohol or use drugs and behave in ways you are ashamed of. Perhaps someone has told you to get some help.
- You get angry and lose your temper a lot at work with your boss or employees, or at home, and sometimes feel out of control.
- You are under enormous stress and worry a great deal over what people think about you or your job or money.
- You have had a loss in your life, a death, a separation or divorce, a job loss.
How I Can Help
- As a counselor and therapist, often I am a sounding board, helping guide you to a more optimistic and hopeful view of possibilities.
- I am warm, friendly, and welcoming. People tell me I listen well, at a deep level.
- Also, I’m a straight shooter. If you want an opinion, I’ll tell you honestly and directly. You’ll get no “psychobabble” from me.
- I’m practical and concrete in what I have to say and recommend. In that sense, I’m like a sports coach. Much as golf star Tiger Woods uses a coach to help him improve his game, I can help you improve your “game” at work and home. In addition to my office-based practice, I facilitate leadership and team building in businesses and corporations. What that means to you is that if you are having work-related problems, likely I can understand your situation and help.
- Hard-nosed research drives my work. I incorporate the most current, state-of-the-art principles of counseling, psychology, clinical social work, motivation, change, as well as depression and anxiety research. When I suggest a strategy for you, I know it works.
- Typically, I work with clients in 2 ways.
- First I invite you to look inward and self-examine. How are you thinking about yourself, positively or negatively? Do you acknowledge your strengths and accept your challenges or are you overly self-critical and beat yourself up? How are you feeling about you, generally upbeat and happy or more depressed, angry, or anxious? And finally are you behaving in ways that are good and constructive for you or are you regularly “shooting yourself in the foot?”
- Second, I encourage you to take a look at your relationships with others, at home, school, and work, and consider with whom you might improve matters and how you might go about doing that.
- And finally, I have a sense of humor. I really believe in the importance of laughter. So you should know I’m an “old guy” (in my mid-fifties), a senior clinical social worker with loads of experience in different clinical settings. I’ve been in practice since 1986.
