This month we welcome Dr. Rob Vandercook to our clinical team. A licensed psychologist, Dr. Vandercook trained at Chestnut Hill College and did his post-doctoral training at two outpatient practices in New Jersey. Dr. Vandercook was previously a school guidance counselor, and also a child and family therapist serving children and adolescents in foster care.
Dr. Vandercook treats adults and children of all ages. He says that "When working with children I attempt to foster self-confidence and contentment in place of sadness and worry... and build cooperation in place of lying and defiance. I help youngsters develop a greater sense of self-control to help reduce aggression and tantrums and help develop genuine closeness to reduce clingy behaviors and irritability."
With teenagers, Dr. Vandercook has an unusual ability to develop therapeutic bonds with angry, resistant and withdrawn teenagers. He works with the whole family to improve communication and relationships within the family as a whole.
Dr. Vandercook has experience and training in working with adults at all stages of life. He prefers to focus on strengths rather than the "pathology" or illness of his clients. He tells us, "I may be a bit old fashioned, but I view the ancient Greek definition of psychology being 'the study of the soul' as very relevant in today's world. I should clarify that I do not use 'soul' in a religious sense, rather I view it as that part of our being that constantly calls upon us to be who we really are and is constantly searching for a greater sense of wholeness."
Dr. Vandercook will be offering daytime, evening and weekend appointments and will be accepting most insurance plan

When I teach it to my clients, it is chiefly to help them with learning how to step back from the things which stress or depress them. It is one of the tools that my clients continually thank me for teaching them for this very reason.
HOW TO MEDITATE
The steps for meditation are really simple. I usually recommend that it be done once or twice a day, or whenever you need a break (or have trouble sleeping).
1. Picture your breath coming in and going out from a spot below your belly button.
2. Focus on your breath.
3. You will be distracted, naturally.
4. Casually notice that you are distracted, then tell that which you are distracted by that you are focusing on your breath right now and that you will return to it later if needed.
5. Return to focusing on your breath.
Some general tips for the beginner:
1. If you experience physical discomfort, shift your focus from your breath to that which distracts you. Focus on the distracting discomfort as you resolve it. Then return your focus to your breath after you resolve the discomfort.
2. The beginner usually makes the mistake of becoming discouraged due to distraction. I have been meditating since I was 12 years old, and I still get distracted, every time I meditate. There is no problem with being distracted in meditation. The problem is in dwelling on being distracted. The point of being less distracted comes with time.
3. Start out with 3-5 minutes per day in a quiet place, and work your way up to 15 or so minutes per day. Bedtime is usually a sufficient time to practice, as it is relaxing and can help with falling asleep.
NOW GO AND TRY IT!
That's it! I've just saved you lots of money on meditation tapes, CDs, books, etc. Of course, there are more advanced methods, both practical and spiritual. But this method is free, simple, and can be brought anywhere. So give it a try!
Some people don’t like meditation for spiritual reasons because of a fear of outside evil entities invading one’s mind. For that I usually suggest lectio divina (an example coming from my personal spiritual tradition--see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lectio_Divina), or simply praying a prayer of protection before starting.
I'd be interested to know if you tried meditation and/or what your thoughts are about it. Feel free to comment by emailing me at nprentice@psychochoices.com.
