About My Practice

Dr. John Howkins has been practicing psychiatry for many years. Now in semi-retirement, he has kept himself fully up-to-date in contemporary standards of care including use of all the latest psychiatric medications. Dr. Howkins has worked in numerous hospital and agency settings as well as in private practice. Two of his major positions have been on the staff of the University of Pennsylvania Department of Psychiatry and at Lankenau Hospital, where he served as assistant director of the psychiatric unit. In addition to his hospital positions, Dr. Howkins has worked in community mental health in West Philadelphia, and also served for many years as a psychiatric consultant at Bryn Mawr College. Dr. Howkins is also a trained psychoanalyst. At Psych Choices, he conducts medication evaluations and medication management, often working as part of a team with our psychotherapists.
